Life Doesn’t Have Content Pillars, So Why Should I?
I thought being clear meant choosing one thing. I’m learning that clarity can also come from letting all the different parts of you belong.
Everyone I’ve ever talked to who is relevant in some way on social media, whether that’s a marketing agency, social media agency, coach, influencer, etc., seems to tell you the same thing: niche down. Pick a lane. Choose one thing and religiously talk about it.
I get it, really, and I understand why. They’ve found a way to monetize the one thing they want to be known for, or the thing they could talk about forever (ex., inflammation in women, astrology, manifestation, skincare, how to make money, Substack growth—the list goes on). And honestly, it’s really good advice for some people. I’ve even given it to my own clients because it DOES work. There’s something really powerful about having one clear lens through which people can understand what you do.
But here’s my take: I’ve done that, and it never worked for me.
My brain, or Human Design, to be specific, isn’t meant to be labeled or put into a category. And once I figured this out thanks to Jenna Zoe’s Align app, it was such a game changer for the way I live my life. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, go to her Substack, glance over the content, and download the app right now. No, I mean it.
Before I knew my design, the more I tried to narrow down my niche, the more misaligned I felt, as if I was hiding 90% of my life. I wasn’t able to share the parts of me that I knew people would connect with, and that reason alone is the complete opposite of what I want to use my platforms for.
Instead, I was pushed to stay performative, make sure the analytics were trending up, and have a strategy with every single thing I shared. The more I think about it, it’s probably the reason I was turned off by social media for so long.
The few times I’ve “niched down,” I’ve failed miserably. It made me so stressed. I’d sit there trying to figure out what to say, how to explain the same thing with a new hook, and how to keep talking about one subject without feeling like I was forcing it. No wonder it wasn’t performing because I was performing—rather than coming from an authentic place.
It just wasn’t for me.
My life isn’t one-dimensional. My interests aren’t one-dimensional. My perspective doesn’t ever come from a single subject. We are three-dimensional people, so why keep us in a box?
The way I look at it is that every experience gives us a new way of looking at something, understanding something differently, and one thought often leads to another, yet somehow they always connect. This part is fascinating and what truly lights me up.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason it never worked for me personally is that I wasn’t trusting my true, authentic makeup and how I’m meant to share it with the world.
So it’s safe to say you will not find a specific niche on this publication. If you were hoping for that, then this might not be the place for you. But there is a throughline. Everything connects. And I’ve finally given myself permission to let it.
My four pillars that connect everything I share:
UNFILTERED
This is where I get to be honest about what’s actually happening in my life. The things I’m experiencing, the things I’m figuring out, the things I’m questioning, and the things I’m changing my mind about. Motherhood, relationships, identity, personal shifts, hard truths, and the parts of life I don’t necessarily have neatly wrapped up.
I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling like I needed to have the answer before I was allowed to talk about something. I don’t want to do that here. Sometimes I’ll know exactly what I think, and I’ll share my personal journey with my protocol, but it’s just that—a protocol, not a guide to live your life. And more often than not, I’ll still be figuring it out. Sometimes I’ll write because something just happened that I must share with you, almost like a download from the universe or a magical moment that I’m in utter shock about. Other times, I’ll simply want to share something that feels true for me in that moment, with the invitation to see it too.
I don’t want everything I share to have a lesson at the end, or journaling prompts, or the 5-step routine you must follow to get engagement. Because what works for me isn’t what will work for you. I want to be able to talk about the things I’m still working through, the things I’m learning as I go, and even the things I may see completely differently six months from now. That’s why this category exists: to have room for it all.
WORK
Ah, work. Before you skim past this section, I encourage you to read on because it’s not what you’re probably thinking.
Work has been such a huge part of my life that I’ve had to learn how to separate who I am from what I do. I’ve spent the better part of the last decade building 6-figure businesses, working with founders, leading teams, creating, strategizing, making money, losing a lot more, figuring things out, and questioning what I actually want my relationship with work to look like.
So yes, I’ll talk about LRA, creativity, business, ambition, career, leadership, money, success, failure, and all the things I’m learning along the way. I’ll share what’s in the works, what I’m letting go of, the wins that feel worth celebrating, the things that didn’t work, and the little moments that change the way I think about what I’m building.
Because I’m just as interested in the role work gets to play in my life as I am in the work itself. I don’t want to build a successful life and realize somewhere along the way that I forgot to actually live it.
THINGS I’M CURIOUS ABOUT
This one might be my favorite because it gives me the spaciousness I’ve always craved to follow my curiosity.
There are so many things that catch my attention and make me want to understand them a little more deeply. Human behavior. Rewiring our subconscious. Why we do the things we do. Relationships. Spirituality. Creativity. Beauty. Psychology. Sustainability. The way our minds work. The things we believe about ourselves and where those beliefs came from. Sometimes it’s from something I read, sometimes it’s a conversation I’ve had that sparks my attention, and other times it’s a thought that seemingly comes out of nowhere and refuses to leave.
I love following those threads. I can spend hours going down a rabbit hole because something made me curious, and usually somewhere along the way I find myself seeing something in a completely different way. There’s something about following a question without knowing where it will lead that feels really natural to me. I don’t need every thought to become a conclusion. Sometimes I just want to understand something a little better, look at it from another angle, or share what I’m noticing as I go.
I don’t always have an answer or a neatly packaged takeaway. I just have a thought I want to follow and share my observations with you. I like having a place where I don’t have to know where the thought is going before I start writing.
LIFE LATELY
Then there’s the everyday stuff, which honestly might be some of my favorite things to share because it’s the heart of who I am.
The book I’m currently reading. My staple wardrobe and the outfits I keep reaching for. Daily rituals, slow mornings, beauty products I’m loving, a new recipe I’m trying, something I bought for my home, a place I went, trying something new, or simply enjoying life and all it has to give us.
I don’t want to underestimate how much these little things make up a life. A morning matcha. A nature walk. A new skincare treatment. A recipe that turned out really well. A book I can’t put down. The little routines that make my days feel good, the things I’m discovering, and the things that simply make me want to share them with someone else.
Not everything has to be profound.
Sometimes the thing that makes me happy or makes me smile is worth sharing simply because I love it. I think there’s something really beautiful about letting the everyday be enough without needing to turn it into a lesson or a piece of content with a purpose.
And honestly, that’s part of what I want more of here. A life that gets to be lived, not constantly turned into something to perform, explain, or optimize.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
These aren’t rigid categories, and you won’t find me rotating through them like a content calendar. I’m not going to sit down on Sunday night and decide that this week has to be Work and next week has to be Life Lately.
That would defeat the entire point.
They’ll overlap because real life does. A thought about motherhood might turn into something about identity. Something happening in my business might make me question something about myself. A book I’m reading about quantum physics might send me down a rabbit hole that becomes an essay. A morning walk might lead to an observation about gratitude and the life we get to live.
I want this publication to have the same kind of freedom I want for myself. To follow what feels interesting, meaningful, exciting, beautiful, or worth talking about without having to force it into a predetermined schedule. The things I share will come from what is actually happening in my life and what is genuinely taking up space in my mind, which means you might never know exactly what you’re going to get—and honestly, I kind of like that.
There isn’t one kind of thing you can expect to find here other than myself. I am the throughline, and I’m finally ready to share it all with you.
Because there are so many parts of me, and so many things I want to talk about, that I don’t want to choose between them anymore. I don’t want to decide that because I’m a designer I can only talk about design, or because I’m a business owner I should only talk about business, or because I write about something personal once, I suddenly need to become the person who writes about that forever.
The common thread isn’t the subject. It’s the way I see it.
These four pillars are simply the places my mind and my life naturally seem to go. They give me enough structure to know where I’m going without telling me where I have to end up.
And maybe that’s what I needed all along. Not another category to fit myself into. Just enough room to be myself.
Now I’m curious: which one are you most excited to read?
Unfiltered. Work. Things I’m Curious About. Life Lately. Hit reply and tell me. I genuinely want to know what you’re drawn to.
Or maybe it’s simply the unfolding of a real life from someone who has lived many. (More to come on this.)
Hi, I’m Lyndsey.
I write to better understand the lives we’re building and the people we are, exploring what it means to create a life that actually reflects who we are, not who we thought we needed to be. My hope is that somewhere in these words, you feel a little more seen, a little more understood, and a little more connected to yourself.
A weekly invitation to slow down and hopefully spark something in you: a thought, a question, a feeling, or a new way of seeing things.
